■About the work
The focus of this work is the dugong, whose northernmost habitat is Yanbaru in Okinawa.
Looking out over the Okinawan seas, where dugongs have disappeared, the fisherman narrates in the style of Kumiodori, a form of theater perfected in Okinawa in the 18th century.
Encouraging the fisherman are the Heike crabs, the resurrected spirits of the Heike warriors who sank to the bottom of the sea during the Battle of Dannoura. The Heike crabs narrate in the style of Noh.
It is said that the dugongs have still not forgotten the fishermen and have migrated to live on southern islands, and the fishermen and Heike crabs travel to the southern islands accompanied by the Maui song and dance "Haka."
In the second act, Emperor Antoku, who sank into the sea, speaks in the style of Noh. Dugong, who became friends with Emperor Antoku, lost his sight and…
